Join the lab

Our lab contains researchers and trainees from diverse backgrounds. We always strive to make the lab an inclusive, caring, fun and stimulating place to do research. Trainees are encouraged to take ownership of their own projects and grow as independent scientific thinkers. We work together to build individualized training plans, covering research, communication and career development, to support each person’s career journey, whether in academia, industry or beyond.

Undergraduate research opportunities

We welcome undergraduate researchers to the lab. The accessibility and tractability of Drosophila as a model system make it an ideal introduction to experimental research, and undergraduates in our lab are able to quickly develop their own projects. Over the years, many undergraduates have joined the lab and contributed to our research discoveries and publications, and many have gone on to graduate and medical school.

  • Summer studentships. Undergraduates interested in a summer research project should contact us (grewalss@ucalgary.ca) in the fall semester of the preceding year with a CV and a short statement of their research goals and interests. More information on summer studentship programs can be found here.

  • Research during the academic year. Students can also carry out a research project in the lab during the academic year as part of their undergraduate coursework, usually through CMMB 528/530 or MDSC 507/508/528. Interested students should contact us (grewalss@ucalgary.ca) well before the start of the relevant term with a CV and a short statement of their goals and interests.

  • Accelerated Master’s program (BHSc). Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) students intersted in joining the lab through the Accelerated MSc Stream should contact us early to discuss fit and potential opportunities. More information on the program can be found here.

For any of these opportunities, please reach out to grewalss@ucalgary.ca.
